History Of Namakkal

Namakkal is a highly environmental and healthy city; know for Industrial hub as well as one of the pilgrimage centers in South zone. The heart of the town is a hillock made of a single rock and a fort on the top acknowledged as National Monument. The hillock is also known Namagiri has its name to the town namakkal. Namakkal is an eminent town right from Himalaya and down to Kanyakumari because of Kavingnar Ramalingam Pillai, the poet and enthusiastic devotee of Namagiriamman, Sri Narahari Aachar as well as Ramanujar, are born and brought up here in namakkal city. The hillock also called as Sri Salagramam means the picture of Maha Vishnu or a holy stone. After replacing the Sanjeevi in its location, Hanuman on his way back to Srilanka with a Salagramam. From the sky he watches the Kamalalayam, a scared water tank below. In order to do his morning Sooriya Namaskaram, he alights at the bank of Kamalalayam. He placed the Salarramam on the bank of Kamalalayam and sat on for namaskaram. When he awake from his meditation he saw that the Salagramam grown from his meditation he had seen the salagramam grown as a massive one not able to lift. Then Namagiriamman appeared in front of him and blessed him with boons and asked him to leave the grown Salagramam there it self. Hanuman was spellbound on the unexpected vision, and generosity of Namagiriamman left the Salagramam where it became enormous in size.
